Goethe-Institut Bangladesh organised an event titled ‘Berlinale Talents: Application Panel Bangladesh’ on Thursday at its auditorium in Dhanmondi.

The main aim of the event was to provide information to aspiring local filmmakers, so that they may prepare their applications accordingly for the ongoing Call for Entries to join the Berlinale Talents 2020 to be held from February 22 – 27, 2020 in Germany.

Kirsten Hackenbroch, director of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, gave the welcoming speech addressing the filmmakers and audience.

‘With today’s Berlinale Talents Application Panel in Bangladesh, we want to give all film community members, planning to apply for Berlinale Talents 2020, a chance to hear first-hand experiences from two alumni of 2019 and to get your questions answered by them as well as the Berlinale Talents programme manager. For all others, we hope this panel inspires you for your future film careers,’ said Kirsten Hackenbroch.

Following the speech, Florian Weghorn, Berlinale Talents’ programme manager, joined the event from Berlin via a video conference call where she provided detailed information of the application process and selection criteria.

The two Bangladeshi filmmakers who were a part of Berlinale Talent’s previous session Humaira Bilkis (Berlinale Talents Doc Station 2019) and Cinematographer Barkat Hossain Polash (Berlinale Talents 2019) shared their experiences of the programme, gave tips and spoke about the application process.

It is a great way to know about filmmakers from all over the world. A Bangladeshi filmmaker should at least apply to know where he/she stands in terms of global filmmaking. It will be really helpful,› stated Barkat Hossain Polash.

‘The questions in the selection process are very personal and needs to be answered through experience. “Mistakes” was the theme of the programme the year I applied for and the answers I gave were tailor-made according to the mistakes i actually made in real life. Hence, I really enjoyed it. Apart from this, the programme itself is very enjoyable, it is a good place to network and make professional contacts,› stated Humaira Bilkis.

After the discussion, the filmmakers answered queries coming from the audience. Filmmaker Abu Shahed Emon presided over the programme.
